ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field’s challenges. The Baltimore ACM Professional Chapter was recently formed to help organize monthly seminar, professional meetings and networking events, professional development workshops, and provide collaboration opportunities with computing organizations and research labs in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. ACM Baltimore Chapter is scheduled to organize the fourth seminar on Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Smart Cities – IoT Deployment, Equity, and Fairness
Gabriella Waters is a data scientist, cognitive researcher, and the founder of Progressive Heuristics – a tech company focused on innovations that make artificial intelligence and neural network technologies more accessible and equitable across all populations. She is also the Director of Public Relations for Morgan State University’s Center for Equitable AI and Machine Learning Systems (CEAMLS). In her research, Gabriella is interested in studying the intersection between human neurobiology/learning and intelligent systems that make use of that foundation for improved human-computer synergy. She develops technology innovations, with an emphasis on support for neurodiverse populations, as well as the creation of more robust systems that function in the absence of human interaction.
Building the Metaverse to Solve Our Most Intractable Urban Challenges
Amen Ra Mashariki is a Senior Principal Scientist and leads worldwide AI Smart Cities initiatives at NVIDIA where he works with private sector partners to build complex AI solutions that solve intractable urban challenges. Amen Ra is also a Visiting Scholar at the Georgetown Massive Data Institute where he partners with academic, and public sector thought leaders to shape best practices and strategies on how to use data and AI to maximize impact in communities.
Dr. Mashariki was previously the Global Director of the AI Lab at World Resources Institute. There he worked across programs, international offices, and centers to identify AI solutions to turn big ideas into action to sustain our natural resources—the foundation of economic opportunity and human well-being. Dr. Mashariki has served as Head of Machine Learning at Urbint, adjunct faculty at NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), and Fellow at the Harvard Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Dr. Mashariki served as the first Chief Analytics Officer for the City of New York under the de Blasio administration and the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics. In the Obama administration, Dr. Mashariki was appointed to be a White House Fellow, as well as the Chief Technology Officer for the Office of Personnel Management of the United States. Amen earned a Doctorate in Engineering from Morgan State University, as well as a Master and Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Howard and Lincoln University respectively.
